Three Dishes To Cook When Going Camping
Some of the most satisfying moments when you are camping come when you sit down to relax and eat a meal you have prepared. Whether it’s the fact that you are eating outside in the Great Outdoors, or the fact that you managed to feed four hungry people and used only one pan, there is nothing quite like eating hearty camp food.
Wherever you happen to go camping, it is vital you bring the correct camping equipment. Your basics would include a tent, sleeping bags and a fuel stove – don’t rely on wood being available. For cooking you will need pans, dishes, utensils and fire-starting materials. When camping, it’s usually best to pack energy rich foods that are easily prepared, such as pasta, beans, and chicken. Try and get your hands on a good esky or fridge, and don’t forget a torch, insect repellant and a utility knife.
Despite having the best camping equipment, some people avoid camping because they dislike the idea of camp-cooked food. Perhaps too many camping trips as a child being force-fed corned beef and packet mashed potato puts some people off camping, but with a little bit of creativity, you would be surprised at what you can do with one pan and an open stove.
Try your hand at Pork Risotto and you may be amazed at the results. Stir fry cubed pork and chopped hotdogs in a pan, and then add diced onion, peas, mushrooms, three tablespoons of dark soy sauce, a beef stock cube and salt and pepper. Add boiling water and simmer for half an hour. Stir fry ¾ pound of rice in some oil, top up pork mixture with water and add the rice. Bring to the boil and simmer for about five minutes. Take off the heat, cover and wait until the water has been absorbed and the rice is tender.
Camping food has the tendency to be quite heavy, but if you are sick of carbs and you hunger for something lighter, try this Chicken Salad. Fry diced chicken in a pan, and then add chopped mushrooms and leek, salt and pepper. Fry until tender, add a cupful of white wine and simmer. Prepare a salad: leaves, vinaigrette, cherry tomatoes, and feta cheese. Once the chicken has cooked, let it cool slightly, and then serve on top of the salad.
For a camping dish that really could not be easier, this Lamb Casserole is perfect. Add diced lamb, potatoes, carrot, swede, cauliflower, broccoli, peas, parsnip, onion, beer, lamb stock cube, salt and pepper, rosemary if you have some, into a pot and bring to the boil. Simmer for at least an hour and serve with crusty bread. Easy as that!
And when dinner is over and you are feeling replete, get tucked up in your sleeping bags and watch nature’s television.
